Finally, you don't have to use two hands to text on an Android phablet
As the Android world awaits N, the latest version of the mobile operating system, Alphabet Inc.
’s Google released some cool new phone software as a sort of
consolation: an all-new Android keyboard geared for one-handed typing.
Phablets
may be great for watching video, reading email, surfing the Web and
choosing the right filter for your group selfie. But these same massive
displays are terrible when it comes to that all-important activity,
typing.
The new Google Keyboard app, rolling out now in the
Google Play app store, addresses that need. Once installed, you give a
long press to the keyboard’s comma key, and up pops a green
phone-in-hand icon. Slide up to it, and the keyboard squeezes over to
the right. You can pin the skinnier keyboard to the left as well, so
this will work for both righties and lefties.
Even though the one-handed version of the keyboard is, by design,
shrunk down, it still works great with gesture typing: Sweep your
fingers across keys to spell out words quickly, while keeping the phone
stable in your hand.
Another nice ergonomic feature: You can
adjust the keyboard’s height in the app’s settings, making it taller or
shorter as needed. You can also turn on or off borders around keys—some
people may want clear targets for where their fingers should land.
One hand typing is a feature that that rearranges your android keyboard
and repositions the keys to fit into a one hand typing position, what
this means is when one hand typing is activated on your android the
keyboard is rearranged to fit in the position to type with one of your
hand(your thumb) either your left hand or left, depending on what
position you want it.
The one hand typing feature is especially nice and handy for those who
like typing with one hand(especially myself), I prefer typing with one
hand except when my scree is on landscape, but now this feature has made
better.
Requirements To Enable One Hand Typing On Android
-Android 4.2+(jelly bean and above).
-Google Android Keyboard latest version installed
To activate you must download the Google Android Keyboard from Android Playstore
After downloading, make the Google Android Keyboard your default keyboard.
Done with the above, open a text app, WhatsApp or any app that requires
typing. Once the keyboard comes up, hold on the comma key ',' and two
icons would appear above it, drag your thumb to the one on the right and
the one hand typing feature has been activated.
Next is to position it to fit typing with your left hand or right hand,
by default it is positioned for left hand typing, once the feature is
activated tap on the arrow that appears on the bottom right to make it
switch to right hand typing, same method for left hand typing.
